Article: Higher order rapid transit is displacing tenants across Toronto
Across the GTA, many tenants located near new transit are facing eviction. This article discusses a recent study of five Black renter communities in Toronto's Northwest — Rexdale—North Albion, Jane—Finch, Weston, Weston—Finch, and Little Jamaica. In each of these communities, eviction rates are higher than the average across the City; in two areas in particular, Weston and Jane—Finch, 1 in 10 tenants face eviction.
This article illuminates the immediacy of the threat of displacement facing tenants in Mount Dennis. Residents should be able to reap the benefits of these new services, not fear having to leave their communities because of them. With one of the largest and — projected to be — one of the busiest transit hubs in Toronto now located in Mount Dennis, the MDCLT's goal is to prevent this trend from worsening.
